The Kahawa Law Courts has granted prosecutors 30 more days to review case files in the ongoing Mawego Police Station arson case. Eight individuals are accused of setting the station ablaze and are facing multiple charges linked to the incident.
Senior Principal Magistrate Richard Koech issued the extension during a mention of the case, setting September 29, 2025, as the next date for mention. He also allowed the accused persons the option of attending the session virtually.
The eight accused are: Kennedy Oluoch, Nicholus Otieno, Tofiq Owiti Mohammed, Michael Omondi Opiyo, David Bill Clinton Otieno, Samuel Ouma, Robert Ouko Abala, and Erick Obunga Osumba. They face charges of committing a terrorist act contrary to section 4(1) of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, arson under section 332 of the Penal Code, and malicious damage to property under section 339 of the Penal Code.
All the suspects pleaded not guilty when first arraigned on July 15, 2025. They were each released on a cash bail of Ksh. 50,000, except for Robert Ouko Abala. At the latest mention, Magistrate Koech revised his bail terms, granting him the same cash bail as his co-accused.
The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) sought the extension to complete a review of the case files and the evaluation report on the Mawego Police Station incident.
