There was drama at the Milimani Law Courts on Monday after activist Julius Kamau turned a routine court mention into a passionate religious address, claiming that President William Ruto’s presidency was a punishment from God for Kenyans having turned away from the Lord’s commandments.

Kamau, who is facing traffic obstruction charges alongside five other suspects, appeared before the court for a routine mention of their case. The activist informed the court that he was interested in negotiating a plea bargain in relation to the charges against him.

However, when granted an opportunity to address the court, Kamau deviated from the matter before the court and launched into a passionate address on the state of the country, invoking religion and the plight of poor Kenyans.

Kamau declared that Ruto’s presidency was a punishment from God, arguing that Kenyans would continue to suffer because the country had turned away from God and stopped observing the Lord’s commandments. “Ruto’s presidency is a punishment from God,” Kamau said, as he urged Kenyans to reflect on what he described as the country’s departure from religious and moral values.

He further claimed that Kenyans had stopped listening to the poor, who, according to him, were facing numerous hardships without anyone paying attention to their cries. The activist said the suffering of ordinary Kenyans had reached a point where the Lord had taken notice of their plight.

Kamau is charged alongside five other suspects over an incident alleged to have occurred on August 17, 2026, when they allegedly obstructed the operations of vehicles along Taifa Road. According to the charges, the suspects allegedly barricaded the road using two dummy wooden caskets and two small wooden crosses, disrupting the movement of vehicles along the busy Nairobi road. The incident led to their arrest and subsequent prosecution on traffic obstruction-related charges.

Monday’s court appearance was expected to focus largely on the progress of the case and Kamau’s proposal to pursue a plea bargain. Instead, proceedings took an unexpected turn when the activist used his opportunity to address the court to speak about the country’s political and social situation.

Kamau maintained that the hardships facing poor Kenyans were a consequence of the country’s failure to follow God’s commandments. He also claimed that the cries of the poor had gone unheard, insisting that their suffering could not continue without consequences.

His remarks caused a dramatic moment in court as he continued with his religious and political message while addressing the court.
