Police in Kayole have arrested two individuals suspected of being part of a gang that has been targeting “Bolt” motorcycle riders. The suspects allegedly lured the riders through online ride requests and robbed them at gunpoint after reaching the drop-off point.

The suspects, identified as Peter Okola Ngala and 22-year-old Befley Mokeira, also known as Kamum, were reportedly found in possession of a mobile phone stolen from one of the victims.

According to police reports, at least four robbery cases were reported at the Kayole Police Station between May 24 and June 8, 2025, under Occurrence Book (OB) entries: 45/24/5/2025, 59/28/5/2025, 76/6/6/2025, and 16/8/6/2025.

The victims Joseph Kihato Kagunda, Meshack Ngigi Njoki, Peter Githini, and Isaiah Mukaria told police they were contacted by the suspects to provide rides from Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) to Kayole. Each was subsequently ambushed and robbed at the same location, though at different times.

In an affidavit submitted to the Makadara Law Courts, Police Constable Charity Kagwiria of Kayole Police Station, who is leading the investigation, stated that a manhunt led to the arrest of Ngala and Mokeira in the Nyamavilla area on May 7. A stolen phone linked to one of the robbery incidents was found in Ngala’s possession.

“I am investigating robbery with violence offenses under Section 296(2) of the Penal Code, in which the respondents, Ngala and Mokeira, are suspects,” PC Kagwiria stated in court documents.

The victims reported being robbed of mobile phones, money, and other valuables. In some cases, digital wallets were emptied, with funds transferred to various M-Pesa accounts. One victim even lost his motorcycle in the violent attacks.

PC Kagwiria noted that the gang, often armed with a pistol and knives, used threats of violence to subdue the victims. “One of the attackers was armed with a pistol, and three others carried knives. They threatened to harm the victims if they resisted,” she stated.

She added that access to M-Pesa transaction records and mobile data is crucial for tracing the flow of stolen funds and identifying all individuals involved.

During the court proceedings, PC Kagwiria requested a 14-day custodial order to allow police to complete several aspects of the investigation. These include conducting an identification parade, recovering the firearm and stolen motorcycle, analyzing suspects’ mobile phones, and retrieving call and M-Pesa records.

Senior Principal Magistrate Joseph Karanja approved the request, granting police permission to detain the suspects at Kayole Police Station as investigations continue
