Kenyan police have requested a 21-day detention for 185 individuals arrested during the recent protests, citing the need for more time to complete their investigations and alleging that the arrested protesters are a flight risk as their homes are not known to detectives.
The suspects, who face allegations of participating in unlawful assemblies and destruction of property, were apprehended amid widespread demonstrations sparked by economic grievances. This move comes as tensions remain high, with authorities seeking to maintain order while addressing the underlying causes of the unrest.
The court set personal bonds of Kshs. 10,000 for children and Kshs. 50,000 for adults arrested during the protests, requiring them to provide parental or close family details for release. To prevent delays by the police, the court mandated that all necessary documentation be completed and the detainees released by 10 a.m. Thursday 7 July 2024.
