Police in Nairobi have arrested a 32-year-old woman after she subjected her eight-year-old daughter to female genital mutilation (FGM) in Dandora.
The incident happened in Dandora Phase 2 after neighbours raised an alarm upon discovering that the child was being subjected to the procedure at home. The neighbours reportedly confronted the woman, identified as Frolence Ngendo Nyambura, and restrained her before police arrived at the scene.
Officers from Dandora Police Station, accompanied by the Sub-County Children Officer, responded to the incident and confirmed that the child had undergone the procedure using a surgical blade. The eight-year-old was immediately removed from the home and taken to Dandora Phase 3 Health Centre for medical attention. She was later discharged in stable condition after receiving treatment.
The child has since been placed in a safe home where she will remain under protection as she recovers from the ordeal. The incident has prompted investigations into the circumstances surrounding the mutilation and whether anyone else was involved.
The suspect remains in police custody at Dandora Police Station and is expected to face charges under Kenya’s laws prohibiting FGM. She is set to be charged with performing FGM contrary to Section 19(1) of the Prohibition of FGM Act, 2011, as well as cruelty to a child contrary to Section 14 of the Children Act, among other charges.
Police are continuing with investigations as the child remains under the care and protection of relevant authorities.
