Lawyers who take pro bono briefs have got a major boost after the judiciary reviewed their allowances from being paid per file to being paid per one individual in one file.
The lawyers have been receiving Sh 30,000 allowance for each file they handle no matter the number of accused in the said file but with the review they will receive Sh 30,000 for each individual in a file.
In a memo to all heads of stations, Chief Registrar Ann Amadi said they had received complaints from lawyers regarding the said allowances that’s why they were effecting the changes.
“The Judiciary Leadership Team (JLT) at its meeting on October 13 directed that henceforth, the amoun of Sh 30,000 be paid per individual accused persons and not per file. This directive takes effect immediately” the memo reads.
Amadi said a team comprising members of the LSK and Judiciary was appointed to look into the concerns of lawyers and they have recently finalized and submitted its report.
She said they are reviewing the recommendations on quantum basis and other areas of concern and shall revert on the same in due course.
All heads of stations have been directed to implement the reviews and ensure they comply with the JLT’s directive.
