Safaricom Data and Armory Records Cast Doubt Of Evidence in Ex-Cop Rashid Murder Trial

Safaricom call records and police armory logs have raised fresh questions in the murder trial of former Pangani police officer Ahmed Rashid, who is accused of killing two youths in Eastleigh in 2017.

Testifying before Justice Diana Kavedza at the Kibera Law Courts, State witness Daniel Hamisi told the court that Safaricom data showed officer Michael Lekalaile said to have been present during the shooting was not at Eastleigh’s 4th Street on March 31, 2017, when the incident occurred.

“All calls never placed Lekalaile at the scene of the shooting,” Hamisi stated.

In a separate testimony, Peter Kimanzi Mwangangi, who later took charge of the Pangani Police Station armory, said records confirmed that the Ceska pistol said to have been used in the killings had not been issued to any officer on the day of the shooting.

Mwangangi, who joined the police service in 1996, explained that he officially assumed armory responsibilities on May 1, 2017, after medical leave. He clarified that before then, he was not handling firearms management at the station.

The officer said he first learned of the Eastleigh killings through media reports and viral videos. Upon resuming his duties, he received firearms including two Jericho pistols and an AK-47 rifle from Sgt. Allan Kibachio. On May 8, 2017, he formally handed them over to homicide detectives John Wahome and Joseph Owenga from the DCI headquarters, as per a request letter dated April 11, 2017. The transfer was recorded under OB entry number 73/08/05/2017 at 4:57 p.m.

Mwangangi also testified that on April 1, 2017, he had handed investigators several exhibits, including a homemade silver-colored pistol, live 9mm rounds, spent cartridges, bullet heads, bullet fragments, the Occurrence Book covering March 15 April 1, 2017, and the station’s 2017 arms movement register.

So far, 12 of the 21 witnesses lined up by the prosecution have testified in the case against Rashid.

The hearing continues tomorrow
