Four men were today arraigned before the Makadara Law Courts over the attempted vandalism and theft of a Kenya Power transformer valued at KSh1.195 million.
The accused, Erick Wanjohi Ruheni, Julius Matheka Mwisa, Erick Mokaya Sagwe and Lukas Nyangau Minyonga, appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe, where they denied all the charges preferred against them.
According to the prosecution, the four allegedly committed the offences on June 29, 2026, along Kuguru Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area. They are accused of acting jointly with others not before the court in an attempt to vandalize a 100KV transformer, identified as TX No. 151414, valued at KSh1,195,000 and owned by the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC).
The accused were charged with attempting to vandalize energy installations and infrastructure contrary to Section 169(1)(b) of the Energy Act, 2019.
They also face a second count of stealing energy equipment contrary to Section 169(1)(c) of the Energy Act. Prosecutors allege that they unlawfully stole the transformer belonging to Kenya Power.
In a third count, the four were charged with handling stolen energy equipment, with the prosecution alleging that they dishonestly retained the transformer while knowing, or having reason to believe, that it had been stolen.
The accused pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Senior Principal Magistrate Shikwe released each accused on a bond of KSh1.5 million, with an alternative cash bail of KSh350,000 pending the hearing and determination of the case.
The matter will be mentioned on August 4, 2026, for further directions.
