The family of slain university student Sharon Otieno wants former Migori Governor Okoth Obado to fulfil promises he had made to Sharon before her death, including providing her with a house and a car. In a Victim Impact Statement filed before the High Court ahead of sentencing, Sharon’s family said representatives of Obado’s family had acknowledged during a reconciliation meeting that he had made promises to the deceased and indicated that they remained committed to having them fulfilled.

The meeting, held on August 10, 2026, brought together Sharon’s family and representatives of Obado, including his two brothers and a sister-in-law. According to the report, Sharon’s family is willing to embrace reconciliation and believes fulfilment of the promises would help her children, who have borne the brunt of losing their mother.

The family has also asked the court for compensation, saying Sharon’s death and the eight-year court process have financially devastated them. They told the probation officer that they had even sold a one-acre piece of family land and a cow to meet expenses.

Sharon’s family has asked the High Court to consider compensation, saying the murder and the prolonged trial have depleted their finances and left them struggling to provide for her children and meet other family needs. The family says it has spent about KSh1.2 million attending court proceedings over the past seven to eight years and approximately KSh3.5 million on burial and funeral expenses.

The report further states that the family went as far as selling a one-acre piece of land and a cow to meet its financial obligations. It says the family still faces expenses relating to Sharon’s children, education, healthcare, food and housing, and has asked the court to grant appropriate relief.
