A man from Kakamega has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of defiling a 10-year-old girl.
The conviction was secured by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), which presented evidence showing that the child had been sexually abused repeatedly over an extended period.
The prosecution told the court that the accused allegedly used threats and intimidation to prevent the girl from revealing what was happening. The abuse was eventually brought to light after the girl’s mother became suspicious and questioned her. The matter was subsequently reported to the police, leading to the child’s medical examination.
Prosecution Counsel Stephanie Akinyi presented evidence from the child alongside medical findings supporting her account. The prosecution argued that the evidence established the ingredients of the offence to the required criminal standard.
Resident Magistrate D.K. Wambua found the accused guilty of defilement under Section 8(1), read together with Section 8(2), of the Sexual Offences Act, No. 3 of 2006. The court subsequently imposed a life sentence.
The convict has 14 days within which to challenge both the conviction and sentence through an appeal.
