Software developer Rose Njeri, who is facing charges under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act, has been released on a personal bond of Ksh100,000.

Her release comes as the court considers a legal challenge filed by her defense team questioning the validity of the charges against her.

Njeri appeared before Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo at the Milimani Law Courts, where the prosecution had intended to charge her with unauthorized interference with computer systems.

The allegations stem from her creation of a web application that allegedly sent mass emails to members of the Finance Committee of the National Assembly.

However, a high-profile legal team, led by former Chief Justice David Maraga, along with Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, Senator Daniel Maanzo of Makueni, Ndengwa Njiru, Eugene Wamalwa, and former Law Society of Kenya President Eric Theuri, objected to the charges.

They argued that the charge sheet failed to outline a legally recognized offence and that no specific law supports the accusations brought against her.

Former Chief Justice Maraga asserted that the charge sheet did not disclose any actual offence under existing law.

After listening to the lengthy submissions by the defence lawyers, the Court granted Njeri a personal bond of Ksh100,000.

The matter is scheduled for mention on June 20, 2025, when the court will rule on whether Njeri will be required to take a plea on the charges
