In today’s court news, a Kibera High Court Judge, Justice Kavedza, has overturned a previous ruling that granted Philip Aroko a cash bail of Ksh 300,000.

The Judge has directed that Aroko remain in custody for an additional seven days to allow the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to conclude investigations into the alleged murder of Hon. Charles Were.

This decision comes after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) filed an application challenging a ruling by Magistrate Irene Gichobi of the JKIA Law Courts, which had allowed Aroko’s release on bail.

According to case records, Aroko was first presented at the JKIA Law Courts on May 9, 2025, under a miscellaneous application, where the court ordered his detention for seven days pending investigations.

When the initial detention period ended, prosecutors sought an extension, which was denied by the court. Instead, Aroko was released on cash bail.

Dissatisfied with the magistrate’s decision, the DPP petitioned the High Court in Kibera to set aside the bail order and permit continued detention.

In today’s ruling, Justice Kavedza found the DPP’s application to be valid and consequently revoked the bail granted to Aroko.

Aroko is currently being held at Kileleshwa Police Station.
