The inquest into the death of Rex Kanyike Masai during the June 2024 Gen Z anti–Finance Bill protests has been adjourned due to the ongoing February 2026 general elections of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

The Inquest had been scheduled for hearing before Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo at the Milimani Law Courts.

However, proceedings could not continue after several parties most of whom are advocates indicated they were engaged in voting for new LSK officials at various court stations across the country.

Rex Masai was fatally shot while participating in demonstrations in Nairobi’s central business district.

According to reports presented in court, he sustained gunshot wounds during the protests.

His mother, Gillian Munyao, told journalists that her son had joined the demonstrations after work and was attempting to escape tear gas when he was shot in the city centre. She has consistently maintained that her son’s only “mistake” was standing up for the rights of others and that the family’s sole pursuit is justice.

His father, Chrispin Odawa, described Rex in court as a calm, peaceful, and obedient young man.

Following the shooting, Rex was rushed to Bliss Hospital along Moi Avenue in Nairobi, where he was pronounced dead. A doctor from the facility testified that he had been shot in the upper mid-thigh region and likely bled to death before arriving at the hospital.

The prosecution has so far lined up several persons of interest and witnesses as part of efforts to establish who was responsible for the fatal shooting.

The inquest is now expected to resume on February 24, 2026.
