A Nairobi court has granted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) 14 days to detain a man as police complete investigations into the alleged murder of his girlfriend in Kasarani.
Nelson Ambia appeared before Magistrate Joan Mati in a criminal miscellaneous application, where the DCI had sought orders allowing him to be detained for 21 days pending completion of investigations. The court, however, granted the investigators 14 days to conclude the probe before forwarding the investigation file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for perusal and further directions.
Ambia was arrested on October 20, 2026, in his hideout in Naivasha, Nakuru County, over the alleged murder of Feruz Hussein, whose body was discovered at a rental house in Sunton, Kasarani.
According to the DCI’s application, police are investigating a case of murder contrary to Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code.
In a supporting affidavit, Police Constable Amos Menza said Ambia and Hussein had been in a relationship for a long time and were living together in a rental house in Sunton, Kasarani. Police allege that on September 30, 2026, a misunderstanding arose between the two while they were at their residence, resulting in Ambia allegedly killing Hussein.
The investigating officer told the court that after the alleged killing, Ambia recorded a video showing Hussein lying dead on a bed and sent it to his sister, Lavender Kasiti, his brother, Fradian Achevi, and Hussein’s mother, informing them that he had killed her.
The deceased’s brother later reported the matter to police, who proceeded to the house and found Hussein’s body lying on the bed. The scene was processed before the body was taken to Kenyatta University Funeral Home for an autopsy.
The court was told that an autopsy conducted on October 1, 2026, established strangulation as the cause of death.
Police further allege that Ambia left with Hussein’s mobile phone, which he allegedly used to threaten members of her family. The DCI told the court that investigations were still ongoing, including recording statements from witnesses, conducting a mental assessment of Ambia to establish his suitability to stand trial and obtaining a video circulating on social media believed to have been recorded after the alleged killing for forensic analysis.
Investigators also cited Ambia as a flight risk, alleging that he has no fixed abode and moves between rental houses.
The DCI will now have 14 days to complete investigations and forward the file to the ODPP for review and further directions.
