A former social worker at Mama Lucy hospital who was exposed in BBC documentary sentenced to 35 years in jail for child trafficking and child negligence.
Fred Leparan was sentenced 35 years for all counts but the court said he will only serve 25 years and the other 10 will be non-custodial but under close supervision.
Senior Principal Magistrate Esther Kimilu also sentenced his co accused Selina Adundo also a former social worker to two years imprisonment or an alternative fine of Sh 300,000.
Kimilu further ordered that neither of the two convicts shall be given any child related issue after serving time.
She also the directed the release of the two children who had been sold to child services for adoption into nuclear families. One of the children has since passed on.
In her ruling, Kimilu said she was satisfied that there were aggravated circumstances in committing the offense by the convicts.
On Leparan who got the highest sentence, the court said he ought to have appreciated the gravity of the offense so he deserved a deterrence sentence.
However, speaking to the press after the sentencing, Leparan’s lawyer Danstan Omari said he will be moving to the high court to appeal the conviction and sentence because it’s excessive.
