Justice Gatembu Kairu has been elected as the new President of the Court of Appeal following a vote conducted by judges of the appellate court.
Justice Gatembu secured 26 votes in an election that attracted four candidates. A total of 41 ballots were cast by judges of the Court of Appeal, with the newly elected president prevailing over fellow contenders Lady Justice Lydia Achode, Justice Patrick Kiage and Lady Justice Agnes Murgor.
The election ushers in a new chapter in the leadership of Kenya’s second-highest court. As President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Gatembu will be responsible for guiding the court’s judicial and administrative functions while providing leadership to judges serving across the appellate benches.
The position fell vacant after the conclusion of the tenure of Justice Daniel Musinga, prompting the judges of the court to elect a successor.
Justice Gatembu is expected to steer the Court of Appeal as it continues to handle some of the country’s most significant constitutional, civil and criminal appeals.
