What seemed like a peaceful corner of Kenya’s idyllic coastline has turned out to be the site of a major drug bust. Detectives have uncovered a clandestine narcotics lab deep within Mwabungo village, Ukunda an area better known for its beaches than criminal enterprise.
Acting on intelligence and days of surveillance, officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit and Kenya Police raided a secluded, one-acre compound surrounded by tall walls and a guarded gate. Inside, they arrested 37-year-old Italian national Gianardi Giulio and Moses Nanoka Egadwa, a Kenyan citizen.
Authorities recovered lab equipment, suspected drug manufacturing chemicals, and packaging labeled with names of known narcotics. Parts of the compound were also found to be cultivating what is believed to be cannabis.
The two suspects are in custody pending formal charges.
The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to breaking drug networks and ensuring communities are safe from the grip of the illegal narcotics trade.
