Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi was formally charged on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, over claims that he staged his own abduction to obstruct justice.

Appearing before Principal Magistrate Benmark Ekhubi in a Nairobi court, Koimburi pleaded not guilty to two charges: conspiracy to defeat justice and giving false information to the police.

His arraignment follows two missed court appearances that led to a warrant for his arrest. According to the charge sheet, Koimburi is accused of conspiring with others on May 25, 2025, in Mugutha, Juja Sub-County, Kiambu County, to fake a kidnapping incident. The aim, prosecutors say, was to avoid arrest and court proceedings at the Kiambu Law Courts, where he was to answer to four land fraud charges.

While hospitalized at Karen Hospital, Koimburi allegedly issued a public statement claiming he had been abducted by criminals. Prosecutors further allege that on June 7, 2025, he published a YouTube video reiterating the false claims of being kidnapped and tortured statements said to be intentionally misleading and designed to incite public alarm.

Magistrate Ekhubi released the MP on a cash bail of KSh 300,000, requiring him to present three contact persons to guarantee his presence during the trial.

Four co-accused Kanyenya-ini MCA Grace Nduta Wairimu, Peter Kiratu Mbari, David Macharia Gatana, and Cyrus Muhia have already been charged and have denied involvement in the alleged scheme.

Prosecutors allege the group collaborated to fake the abduction in an attempt to delay Koimburi’s prosecution in a KSh 10 million land fraud case, as recommended in a letter from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) dated May 20, 2025.

Koimburi had initially been reported missing after attending a church service, only to be found later in a plantation in Ruiru, allegedly disoriented. He was first taken to Plainsview Hospital before being transferred to Karen Hospital.
