A Voi court has sentenced a man to 10 years in prison after finding him guilty of trafficking 9.3 kilogrammes of bhang valued at Sh279,000.

Daudi Kalamba was convicted of trafficking narcotic drugs, an offence under Section 4(a)(ii) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Cap 245. Principal Magistrate Hosea Mwangi handed down the sentence after the prosecution, led by Prosecution Counsel Nelson Ogeto, proved the case against Kalamba beyond reasonable doubt.

The case arose on June 15, 2026, after police officers at Kamtonga Police Station received information that Kalamba was allegedly growing plants suspected to be cannabis. Acting on the information, officers went to his compound, where they found freshly uprooted green plants packed in two sacks. Police suspected the material had been prepared for transportation to an undisclosed destination.

The seized plants were submitted to the Government Chemist for examination, where laboratory analysis confirmed that they were cannabis sativa, commonly known as bhang. The narcotic consignment weighed 9.3 kilogrammes and was valued at Sh279,000.

In convicting Kalamba, Magistrate Mwangi found that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence linking him to the offence. The court sentenced him to 10 years in prison, with an option of paying a Sh1 million fine.

Kalamba was granted 14 days within which to appeal against the conviction and sentence.
