Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang, the police officer suspected of coordinating the murders of Nairobi lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu and clinical psychologist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, has been arrested in Eldoret after weeks on the run.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters arrested Sang along Uganda Road in Eldoret’s Central Business District following an intelligence-led operation that traced him to Uasin Gishu County. He was driving a silver Toyota Fielder, registration number KCM 508L, which investigators believe he was attempting to sell to raise money for his upkeep.
Sang’s arrest adds a new dimension to investigations into the two killings, which have resulted in murder charges against five suspects over Mbobu’s death and ten over Dr Mutiso’s murder. Among those charged in both cases are Rose Mbithe Mulwa and her two children, Chris Mulwa and Angela Mulwa. Investigators had previously identified Sang as a suspected link between the killings, alleging that he helped coordinate the operation against Mbobu alongside Mulwa.
Mbobu was shot dead on September 9, 2025, as he drove home along Magadi Road near Brookhouse International School in Karen, Nairobi. The former chairman of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal was attacked by men riding a motorcycle who opened fire on his vehicle. Detectives later arrested Police Constable Julius Kipkoech Cheruiyot, whom they suspect was the gunman. Ballistic examinations presented in court allegedly linked a Ceska pistol issued to the officer to ammunition recovered during investigations.
Dr Mutiso was killed on July 29, 2026, after the vehicle in which she was travelling was reportedly blocked along Mawensi Road in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area. Detectives are investigating a possible connection between the two killings and a property dispute involving Mutiso’s husband, Professor David Musyimi Ndetei, and his former wife, Mulwa. Mbobu had previously represented Ndetei in legal proceedings linked to the family dispute.
The ten suspects charged over Dr Mutiso’s murder include Rose Mulwa, her two children Chris and Angela Mulwa and several other individuals accused of playing different roles in the alleged operation. Investigators have cited suspected involvement in surveillance, transportation, coordination and facilitating payments.
With Sang now in custody, detectives are expected to question him about his suspected role in the killings, his alleged links to the other accused persons and the evidence gathered in the separate investigations. He was escorted to Eldoret Police Station for processing pending arraignment.
