Polish authorities have arrested a man suspected of planning an assassination attempt against Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.
Tusk confirmed the arrest, thanking police for what he described as their swift response in handling the reported threat. The arrest followed intelligence received by security agencies indicating that the two senior government officials could be targeted in planned attacks. The information prompted Polish security services to convene an emergency meeting on Sunday to assess the threat.
Jacek Dobrzynski, a spokesperson for the Special Services Coordinator, said the suspect, a Polish national, was apprehended in the Lower Silesia region. He told local media that security officials considered the threat credible, warning that there was a significant likelihood the alleged plans could be executed.
According to Interior Ministry spokeswoman Karolina Galecka, the investigation began after the State Protection Service, which oversees the security of government officials, forwarded an email containing information about the potential attacks to police.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the suspect or indicated whether formal charges have been filed. Tusk has served as Poland’s prime minister since 2023, having previously held the position between 2007 and 2014. He also served as President of the European Council from 2014 to 2019.
