A clerical officer attached to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) headquarters has been arrested over allegations of demanding and receiving a bribe to facilitate the processing of a driving licence.
The suspect, identified as Joseph Njoroge Kihuna, was apprehended on Wednesday following investigations into a complaint by a matatu driver who alleged that the officer had demanded KSh 18,000 to facilitate the issuance of the licence.
According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the officer was arrested within the NTSA headquarters premises while allegedly receiving KSh 8,000, said to be part of the amount demanded from the complainant.
The arrest followed an investigation initiated after the matatu driver reported the alleged bribery demand to the anti-corruption agency.
Investigators are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged transaction and determine whether the officer sought an unlawful payment in exchange for facilitating the licensing process.
Following his arrest, Kihuna was taken to the Integrity Centre for processing as investigations into the allegations continued.
He was later released on a cash bail of KSh 50,000 pending the conclusion of investigations.
The case remains under investigation, and further action will depend on the findings. The allegations against Kihuna have not been proven in court.
