Detectives have arrested one suspect after intercepting cocaine worth approximately Sh2.19 million aboard a passenger bus at the Malaba One Stop Border Post (OSBP).
The consignment was discovered during a routine screening of a Simba Coach bus, registration number KDG 093H, travelling from Kampala to Nairobi.
According to investigators, officers became suspicious after discovering an unattended parcel inside the bus and subjected it to further examination. The situation took an unexpected turn when the driver and conductor reportedly left the scene, abandoning the vehicle and its passengers during the inspection.
Detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB), based in Malaba, took custody of the parcel for further investigations. Preliminary tests established that the substance was cocaine. The drugs were packaged in eight pellets weighing a combined 547.99 grammes, with an estimated street value of Sh2,191,960.
Investigators subsequently arrested the bus turn boy, Meshack Medalack, in connection with the intercepted consignment. Detectives are pursuing the driver, identified as Karama, and the conductor, John Musimbi, as they seek to establish how the drugs were being transported and determine the roles of those involved.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), through NANIB, continues to pursue suspected drug trafficking networks operating along transport routes and across Kenya’s borders.
The bus remains detained at the border post as the company arranges alternative transport for the affected passengers.
