Three individuals have been arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts in connection with the violent protests that engulfed Kikuyu Sub-County on June 25, 2025, in a case that is now under miscellaneous application.

The suspects Kelvin Gakunyi Nyathira, Sarah Wanjiku Thiga, and Moses Tunga are accused of playing key roles in orchestrating coordinated attacks that led to massive destruction of public and private property, arson attacks, looting, and assaults on police stations.

In an affidavit presented in court, police allege that Kelvin Gakunyi was arrested on June 30 in Kikuyu Township while in possession of a stolen Gilboa firearm, serial number KE KP 45302473, loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition. The weapon is believed to have been looted from Dagoretti Police Post during the unrest.

Sarah Wanjiku, described as one of the alleged ringleaders, was arrested on July 1 in the Kamakis area of Ruiru. Police claim she played a major role in mobilizing groups that later torched several government installations within Kikuyu Sub-County.

Moses Tunga was also arrested on July 1 after being found receiving treatment for a gunshot wound at PCEA Kikuyu Hospital. Authorities say the injury was sustained during the protests, but he failed to report the incident to any law enforcement agency.

According to investigators, the trio along with other still-at-large suspects infiltrated the demonstrations in disguise before launching violent attacks. Among the hardest-hit sites was the Dagoretti Police Post, which was reportedly broken into and set ablaze alongside officers’ residences and police vehicles parked within the compound.

The suspects are now under investigation for a string of serious offences including arson, malicious damage to property, robbery with violence, and unlawful possession of a firearm, all punishable under Kenya’s Penal Code.

Police are seeking to detain the three for an additional 21 days, citing the complexity of the investigations. They told the court that more time is needed to take witness statements, conduct forensic analysis, recover other missing weapons and ammunition, and liaise with multiple investigative agencies. Officers also argued the suspects are a flight risk, noting the severity of the charges and their conduct prior to arrest.
