Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Angatia Savula has been issued with a demand letter requiring him to publicly apologise and pull down statements alleged to be defamatory against Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Daraja Nabwera.

Nabwera through lawyer Danstan Omari claims that Savula made “vicious, inaccurate, derogatory” remarks on November 25, 2025 while addressing mourners during the burial of the late Munyuki Secondary School principal Simon Isiaho Shange at Ludodo village in Likuyani Sub-County.

Omari alleges that the Deputy Governor went further and purported to disclose or discuss the MP’s HIV status, a claim they say Savula had “not the slightest of clues” about, and which they argue caused serious injury to the MP’s reputation and career.

They argue that due to Savula’s position as Kakamega Deputy Governor and his past leadership as a two-time Lugari MP, his remarks carry significant weight and could have far-reaching reputational and security implications.

Nabwera is now demanding that Savula issues an unequivocal public apology within six hours of receiving the letter, and that the apology be made with the same “verve, enthusiasm and vigour” as the alleged defamatory remarks.

The MP is also demanding that Savula admits he made statements touching on ongoing court cases, warning that such remarks could offend the sub judice rule.

In addition, he seeking Sh100 million in compensation for what they describe as reputational and career damage caused to the legislator.

The letter further states that Nabwera maintains the remarks attributed to Savula were false and politically motivated, and claims the statements were intended to malign him and drag down his service record in Lugari constituency.

It also states that the MP is willing to undergo a public HIV test alongside Savula at a reputable laboratory, if the Deputy Governor insists on the claims he allegedly made.

The advocates warn that if Savula fails to comply within the timelines set out, they will move to institute legal action against him at his own cost, to seek redress for the alleged defamation.
