On Monday, former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu’s wife, Susan Wangarí, took the stand to defend herself in the ongoing Sh588 million graft case, where she stands accused alongside her husband and others.

Wangarí asserted her innocence, maintaining that the company she co-owns with Waititu followed due process in securing a tender from Kiambu County. She testified before Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzyoki, stating that she and her husband are the proprietors of Bienvenue Delta Hotel.

Prosecutors allege that the hotel received millions from the Kiambu County Government through Testimony Enterprise Limited. In her testimony, Wangarí admitted that Bienvenue Delta Hotel received Sh2.2 million from Testimony Enterprise Limited, as well as two cheques—one for Sh780,000 dated January 14, 2019, and another for Sh800,000—both drawn by Testimony Enterprise Limited in favor of the hotel.

The court was informed that both Wangarí and Waititu were signatories to Bienvenue Delta Hotel’s account, raising further scrutiny over the transactions.

In 2019, Waititu, his wife, Testimony Enterprises, and its directors were charged with irregularly awarding a Sh588 million road tender in Kiambu County. The couple and their co-accused were ordered to present their defense after the prosecution called 32 witnesses, leading the court to conclude that they had a case to answer.
