The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a Busia Law Courts clerk over allegations of demanding and receiving a KSh180,000 bribe to influence the outcome of a criminal case pending before the court.
The suspect, Wesley Kipkoech Langat, was arrested on Monday, August 24, 2026, following investigations into claims that he sought the money on behalf of a presiding magistrate in exchange for a lenient outcome in the case.
According to EACC, the investigations began after a complaint was lodged alleging that the magistrate, through the court clerk, had demanded the money from an accused person as an inducement to secure a favourable penalty. The case involves a commercial vehicle that had been impounded by police officers over alleged traffic offences. The Commission said the alleged bribe was intended to secure a softer outcome for the complainant and six co-accused persons in the criminal proceedings.
With the complaint under investigation, EACC detectives mounted an operation to establish whether the demand would be followed through. The operation culminated in Langat’s arrest shortly after he allegedly received the KSh180,000.
The court clerk was subsequently taken to the Commission’s Western Regional Office in Bungoma, where he remains in custody as investigators process the case. He is expected to be booked at Bungoma Police Station before being taken to court to face bribery-related charges.
