The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has confirmed that a plane carrying wanted fugitive Kelvin Kang’ethe has departed Kenya for the United States, where he will face murder charges.

DPP Renson Ingonga announced in a statement that the extradition of Kang’ethe, a suspect in a murder case, to the U.S. has been successfully secured. The plane left Nairobi on Sunday, September 1, 2024. Kang’ethe is expected to face murder charges at Suffolk Superior Court in Pemberton Square on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

Kang’ethe fled to Kenya in 2023 after allegedly killing his girlfriend, Margaret Mbitu, and leaving her body in a vehicle parked at Logan Airport. He was later apprehended by Kenyan authorities and brought before the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi, where Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina approved the DPP’s extradition application.

The DPP reiterated his support for the U.S. prosecution team handling the case, expressing his commitment to ensuring justice is served. He also extended his support and condolences to the family of the late Margaret Mbitu.

“I wish to reiterate my commitment and support whenever needed to the United States of America and, in particular, to the prosecution team as they proceed with the next phase of the case. To the family of the late Margaret Mbitu, we offer our support and prayers,” said the DPP.

The successful extradition follows a commitment by the DPP to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray in June 2024, assuring that his office was keen on ensuring justice in the case is delivered swiftly.
