Dutch tycoon Murder Trial Set for October After Judges’ September Recess

The high-profile murder case involving Riziki Cherono and Timothy Omondi who are accused of killing Dutch tycoon Rowenhorst Herman and his security guard, Evans Bokoro has been slated for hearing from October 13 to October 15, 2025.

The dates were fixed after the High Court confirmed that judges, including presiding Judge Wendy Micheni, will be away on recess throughout September, when the hearing was initially expected to take place.

Justice Micheni, while allocating the new hearing dates, noted that her September calendar was already fully booked, even after the recess period.

State Prosecutor Bernard Ngiri had urged the court to prioritize the matter in September, insisting that the case had dragged on too long and justice needed to be expedited. However, the court diary could not accommodate the request.

Riziki Cherono, the first accused, is alleged to have been married to the deceased Dutch businessman.

During a prior court session, a witness named Khamis, who worked as a caretaker for the late Rowenhorst, told the court that Evans Bokoro had only worked for five days before he was killed alongside his employer.

Khamis testified that Evans had been hired on March 31, 2021, after the previous night guard was dismissed for sleeping on duty. Khamis temporarily assumed the night guard role until he learned of Evans, who was the brother of a man named Kazungu from nearby apartments. Since Rowenhorst was familiar with Kazungu, he agreed to hire Evans as the new guard.

Khamis recounted that on June 3, 2021, the day before the killings, he handed over the house keys to Evans. He also confirmed that Riziki was present in the house throughout that day.

He further testified that on the day of the murders June 4, 2021 he received a call from Riziki using the late Rowenhorst’s phone. During the call, she asked him to rush to the nearest police station and report that their home had been attacked by intruders and that she had been hijacked.

The double murder took place at Rowenhorst’s apartment in Shanzu, Mombasa County.

The case continues to attract public interest as the trial moves closer to the scheduled October hearing.
