A former Military officer who had absconded from his fraud case has now blamed his wife for his absence claiming when he was arrested she ran away with everything and there is no trace of her till date.

Antony Mwangi told the court that after he was arrested and charged in December, his wife went to their home and took all his property and disappeared without any location.

He pleaded with the court not to cancel his bail terms saying his wife’s disappearance has caused him anguish as she is nowhere to be found.

However, state Counsel Martin Mbote was reluctant to have Mwangi released on cash bail saying the accused had been arrested through a warrant of arrest.

Mwangi was charged with fraud last year in December and after the court and released on a cash bail of Sh 40,000, however he never appeared for the hearing forcing the matter to continue in absentia.

Mwangi was arrested last week through a warrant of arrest after days of keeping off the court corridors and after being presented before Mombasa Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku, he blamed his wife for his woes.

In the case, Mwangi was charged alongside Nicholas Mwangi Chomba with intend to defraud by jointly obtaining from Brian Makari the sum of Sh17,450 by falsely pretending to be recruiting officers from Kenya Coast Guard Services capable of recruiting him in to the service a fact he knew was not true.

They also denied obtaining from Pascal Ngowa the sum of Sh6,000 by falsely pretending to be recruiting officers from Kenya Coast Guard Services capable of recruiting him into the service, a fact he knew was not true.

Mwangi and Chomba further denied two more charges of making a false document purporting the documents to be medical forms, calling letters purporting the documents were issued by Kenya Coast Guard Services.

The matter will be mentioned on Friday 14th February 2025.
