Odoyo Owidi, the former Chairperson of the Lake Basin Development Authority, has come forward with explosive claims, alleging that the late Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were was involved in a brutal murder but evaded justice.

In an interview aired on Prime Time News, Owidi claimed to possess a video showing Were stabbing a man, disemboweling him, and leaving him for dead. Owidi further alleged that Were was often accompanied by a group of nine individuals he referred to as assassins.

“Niko na video ya Ongondo Were akitoa mtu matumbo na kisu na akaenda ni kama hajafanya kitu, he used to walk with 9 assassins, may he rot in hell“Owidi said during the interview.

Owidi added that after the incident, police sought Were, who allegedly went into hiding. Once the police publicly declared they were looking for him, he eventually reappeared and gave a statement. However, Owidi claimed that Were was never charged with the crime. Instead, authorities reportedly arrested and charged his driver with the murder.

Charles Ong’ondo Were was shot and killed on the evening of April 30, 2025, near the City Mortuary roundabout in Nairobi. At the time of his death, he was serving as the Member of Parliament for Kasipul Constituency in Homa Bay County.

Were originated from the Kanabok area, he held a Bachelor’s Degree and a Diploma in Business Management from Mt. Kenya University.

He began his political career in 2017 when he was first elected to Parliament on an ODM ticket, securing re-election in 2022.

Following his murder, 11 suspects have so far been arrested and detained as investigations continue.
