Kenyan Citizen Steve Abdukareem Munyakho, who has been on death row in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is officially free as of 10 a.m. today following the full satisfaction of judicial requirements.
In a statement released on Monday, Kenya’s Mission in Riyadh confirmed Steve’s release and disclosed that he performed Umra, the Islamic minor pilgrimage, immediately upon regaining his freedom.
“Steve Abdukareem Munyakho is now free, and we are grateful to confirm that the judicial decree has been fully satisfied,” the statement read. “Upon his release, Steve undertook the sacred pilgrimage of Umra, a significant spiritual milestone for many Muslims.”
Further details regarding his return to Kenya will be provided in due course, the Mission added.
The release follows sustained diplomatic engagement and widespread support from various individuals and organizations committed to securing a just outcome in Steve’s case.
“I commend all who offered their unwavering support and prayers towards achieving this outcome,” an official familiar with the matter said.
Steve’s ordeal had drawn public attention, with human rights activists and Kenyan leaders urging for diplomatic intervention and compassion from the Saudi justice system.
His release marks the end of a painful chapter for his family and supporters and the beginning of a hopeful reintegration journey back home.
