Parents of Litein High School in Kericho County are demanding accountability from the school administration over what they describe as a recurring cycle of student unrest followed by hefty financial demands.
Through their lawyers, Danstan Omari, Shadrack Wambui, and Sam Nyaberi, the parents have expressed frustration over what they term as “strike-for-profit” schemes allegedly engineered by the school management. They claim the institution has recorded three separate strikes within a short period, each conveniently followed by new levies imposed on parents.
In the most recent incident, every student was directed to pay more than KSh 49,000, allegedly to repair damages from the unrest. The parents, however, insist the figures are exaggerated and unsubstantiated.
“The pattern is suspicious. Every time there’s a strike, parents are forced to contribute large sums of money. We want transparency and a full account of how these funds are utilized,” one parent lamented.
The Parents Teachers Association (PTA) now wants an independent audit of all monies collected from parents after previous strikes and a detailed inventory of any destroyed property. Some parents have gone further to accuse the administration of turning the chaos into a cash cow, alleging that certain teachers may be benefiting from the unrest.
The parents have vowed to pursue legal action if the Ministry of Education and other oversight bodies fail to intervene, warning that the culture of “manufactured unrest” at Litein High School must be exposed and stopped.
