A British man in his 60s has pleaded guilty to dozens of offences involving the drugging and sexual abuse of his wife over a period spanning more than two decades.
The man, whose identity is protected by a court order to safeguard his wife’s anonymity, admitted to 60 offences at a court in Manchester on Monday. The offences date back to 2004 and include administering a substance to his wife with the intention of rendering her incapacitated.
He had previously admitted to other sexual offences against his wife.
The man was scheduled to face trial alongside 12 other men accused of conspiring to sexually abuse the woman while she was unconscious.
The 12 defendants, aged between 28 and 73, deny the allegations and are expected to go on trial at the Manchester criminal court in the coming weeks.
Among those facing trial are a paramedic and a former football coach.
Another man, who was among those accused in the wider case, has already admitted to conspiring to drug and rape the woman.
The case is part of a growing number of investigations and prosecutions in the United Kingdom involving drug-facilitated sexual abuse, in which victims are allegedly incapacitated before being assaulted.
The allegations have also attracted international attention following the conviction in France of Dominique Pelicot.
Pelicot was found guilty after admitting that he had repeatedly drugged his then-wife, Gisèle Pelicot, and arranged for other men to sexually abuse her while she was unconscious over a period of several years.
The British case will continue with proceedings against the 12 co-defendants, who maintain their innocence.
