In today’s court news, a witness has come forward with a detailed account of alleged police misconduct on the day Rex Masai was fatally shot in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

Frederick Omondi, an ICT engineer and Utawala resident, claims that plainclothes officers fired live bullets into a crowd of demonstrators during the incident.

According to Omondi, the shooting occurred around 6:50 PM at the intersection of Mama Ngina Street and Wabera Street, near City Hall. At the time, police were dispersing protesters using tear gas from the Supreme Court Roundabout toward City Hall Way.

As demonstrators scattered and began to regroup along Mama Ngina Street, they were confronted by six police officers two of whom were reportedly dressed in civilian clothes.

Omondi recounted seeing one of the officers, described as wearing a black cap, dark jacket, blue jeans, and white sports shoes, open fire with a pistol.

“He fired several live rounds directly at the demonstrators without any clear target,” the witness statement reads.

The gunfire triggered panic, causing protesters to flee in different directions. Omondi said he stayed briefly at the scene near the Supreme Court Roundabout but left soon after due to the overwhelming tear gas.

On his way home, he observed several injured people including women limping near the Kencom Bus Stage, allegedly hurt during the police crackdown.
