Chairperson of the University of Nairobi Council Professor Amukowa Anangwe got reprieve after the high court suspended government’s plan to revoke his appointment to the council.

Justice Bahati Mwamuye on Tuesday granted a conservatory order suspending Gazette Notice No. 1957 of February 21, 2025, which sought to remove Prof. Anangwe from office.

Additionally, the court barred the State Law Office and the University of Nairobi from appointing a replacement or interfering with his duties.

The case will be mentioned on April 2 for further directions.

Speaking to the press after the ruling, Anangwe said
his removal was a distraction from the institution’s real challenges.

“These are diversionary tactics meant to shift focus from the pressing financial difficulties the university is facing,” he said.

He said that while he initially had no intention of pursuing the matter, he chose the legal route to clear his name.

“I had to fight because my abrupt removal portrayed me as an incompetent leader. That is far from the truth,” he said.

The seasoned don also highlighted the financial struggles at the University of Nairobi, attributing them to reduced government funding.

“The financial woes at the university began when the government cut capitation. As it stands, the University of Nairobi is grappling with a debt burden exceeding Ksh 2 billion,” he revealed.
