Kibet, 23, admitted in court that his actions, which included using the fake account to deceive people and showcase explicit content for financial gain, were driven by his desire for financial gain and not intended to damage Sonko’s name.

The former Nairobi County boss informed Senior Principal Magistrate Onsarigo at Milimani Law Courts that the decision to withdraw the case was influenced by the fact that the student’s parents could not afford the Sh 1 million bond required for bail, making it meaningless to keep the boy in custody.

He stated that he was forgiving Kibet voluntarily and without any conditions.

Sonko said he learned about Kibet after receiving numerous complaints from members of the public.

The student had spent two months in prison as his parents could not afford the bond terms set by the court.

The court allowed the application and discharged the accused student unconditionally.

In thanking Sonko, Kibet said he would never repeat the same offense and that he would be a law-abiding citizen.

He pleaded with Sonko to help him secure a job to cater to his financial needs.

The prosecution had alleged that Kibet, on November 25, 2023, at an unknown place within the Republic of Kenya, intentionally created the said Facebook account with the intent to defraud Kenyans using Mike Sonko’s credentials.
