KMJA Sounds Alarm Over Bullying of Magistrates.

The Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association (KMJA) has condemned what it calls a rising wave of intimidation and online harassment targeting members of the Judiciary.

In a statement issued on October 31, 2025, KMJA expressed outrage over an incident at Maua Law Courts, where a magistrate was blocked and insulted by a group of advocates chanting “mwizi.” The association described the act as mob-like and unacceptable, warning that it signaled a dangerous breakdown in the relationship between the Bar and the Bench.

“ This was not protest it was intimidation and incitement,”
KMJA said in the statement signed by Secretary General Hon. Tom Mark Olando.

The association accused some lawyers of turning justice into public drama and using social media to attack judicial officers. It said such behaviour betrayed the advocates’ oath to uphold the rule of law and risked eroding public confidence in the courts.

KMJA urged advocates to step back from confrontation and use proper channels, including the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and Bar–Bench committees, to address grievances.

“The solution cannot be found in chaos. Let reason prevail over emotion,” the statement read.

It also called on the JSC, Parliament and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission to fast-track security measures for judicial officers, citing rising threats and online harassment.

Reaffirming its stand on judicial independence, KMJA said continued attacks could paralyse the justice system.

“The Judiciary cannot be ground to a halt by those who should be its staunchest defenders,” the association warned.
