Four police officers attached to Mai Mahiu Police Station have been detained for ten days pending investigations into the alleged murder of their colleague.
The officers Jim Muriithi, Emmanuel Sang, Antony Wang’ombe, and Joshua Keter were arraigned before Naivasha Chief Magistrate Abdikadir Lorot after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) sought to hold them for 21 days to conclude inquiries into the incident.
The case stems from the fatal shooting of a fellow officer on October 29 at Msikiti area in Naivasha, following what authorities describe as a botched robbery attempt.
According to Naivasha DCIO Isaac Kiama, a firearm went missing during the shootout, and a truck driver linked to the incident also disappeared under unclear circumstances. Police suspect he may have been abducted.
Investigations reveal that the four officers, acting on a public tip-off, intercepted an Isuzu truck loaded with hardware goods being offloaded. When they confronted the individuals at the scene, the suspects allegedly scattered, and gunfire ensued, leaving one officer dead.
Preliminary findings suggest tampering with the crime scene, with investigators alleging that the pistol found in the deceased officer’s hand was planted to suggest suicide.
The investigating officer, Peter Orwa, told the court that the four officers pose a flight risk and should remain in custody as investigations continue.
Their service firearms have been confiscated and submitted for ballistic analysis, while the bullet that killed the officer remains lodged in the body, pending forensic examination.
Chief Magistrate Lorot granted the DCI’s request to detain the suspects until November 11, 2025, allowing investigators time to finalize their report before forwarding the file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further directions.
