A man posing as a traffic police officer is set to be charged with robbery with violence after allegedly stealing Ksh 999,000 from an Indian national in Nairobi.

Ezekiel Muia Mutuku appeared on Monday before Magistrate Benmark Ekhubi at the Milimani Law Courts, where he was scheduled to face charges linked to the violent robbery.

According to the prosecution, Mutuku robbed Patel Kashyakumar Khantibahi of Ksh 999,000 and used actual violence during the commission of the crime.

In addition to the robbery charges, the prosecution plans to charge Mutuku with unlawful possession of public stores. He is accused of being found with a National Police Service crown badge and a white canvas cap cover both classified as government property on July 2, 2025, at Ronald Ngara Street in Eldoret Township, Moiben Sub-county, Uasin Gishu County.

However, Mutuku did not take a plea after the prosecution notified the court of its intention to file an affidavit opposing his release on bond.

The charges stem from a robbery that took place on June 28, 2025, along 1st Parklands Avenue in Nairobi’s Westlands Sub-county. The victim had just withdrawn Ksh 999,000 from I&M Bank, located roughly 200 meters from the scene of the incident.

Police reports indicate that Mutuku, driving a Toyota Axio, allegedly trailed the victim from the bank, overtook his vehicle, and blocked the road. Two men then exited the Toyota one dressed in a police uniform with a reflective jacket and cap, and the other in plain clothes.

The suspects reportedly forced the complainant to open his car at gunpoint, assaulted him, and made off with the cash.

Through analysis of CCTV footage and mobile phone data, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) traced Mutuku to Eldoret, where he was arrested and later transported to Nairobi for prosecution.

He is expected to take plea on Tuesday before Magistrate Ekhubi.
