Two suspects arrested in Nairobi’s Nyama Kima area over the alleged trafficking of 565 kilograms of cannabis have been detained at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Law Courts pending the preparation of a pre-bail report by the probation department.

The suspects, who are from the Luo Nyanza region, were allegedly transporting the narcotic drugs in an Isuzu FRR vehicle. The cannabis is valued at approximately KSh 16.9 million.

According to the charge sheet, Bernard Juma Oliech and Victor Omondi were arrested on January 7, 2026, at around 7:30 p.m. at Nyama Kima, Nairobi, alongside other suspects who are yet to be apprehended. They were found in possession of 565 kilograms of cannabis, which prosecutors say was intended for trafficking.

The prosecution informed the court that the seized drugs have an estimated market value of KSh 16,950,000.

When the matter came up before Magistrate Njeri Thuku at the JKIA Law Courts, the two suspects denied the charges and pleaded for lenient bond terms. They told the court that they were unable to afford legal representation but said their families were making arrangements to secure a lawyer.

Although the prosecution did not oppose their release on bond, the magistrate directed the probation department to prepare a pre-bail report to guide the court on appropriate bond terms. The report is expected to be presented on January 16, 2026.

The case comes amid renewed efforts by President William Ruto’s administration to crack down on narcotics trafficking, with stern warnings issued to those involved in the illegal drug trade.
