Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga has called for a careful review of proposed reforms to Kenya’s justice system, urging justice sector institutions to ensure that any changes adopted are practical, well-considered and capable of improving access to justice.

Ingonga, who currently serves as the Vice Chairperson of the National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ), made the remarks during a council meeting attended by Chief Justice Martha Koome and other justice sector stakeholders.

The meeting focused on strategies to strengthen the administration of justice, improve access to justice and address challenges that continue to prevent members of the public from accessing timely, effective and affordable justice services.

Ingonga urged members of the Council to critically examine proposed amendments before their adoption and implementation, emphasising the need for reforms to respond to existing gaps within the justice system. He said proposed changes should be evaluated against their potential to improve service delivery, strengthen institutional effectiveness and promote the efficient administration of justice.

The deliberations also provided an opportunity for justice sector institutions to explore ways of enhancing coordination and addressing barriers that affect access to justice, particularly for vulnerable and marginalised groups. The DPP stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration, describing coordinated efforts among justice sector institutions as critical to building an efficient, responsive and people-centred justice system.

Through the NCAJ framework, justice sector institutions continue to work together on measures aimed at improving service delivery, promoting accountability and ensuring that the administration of justice responds to the needs of Kenyans.

The engagement comes as institutions within the justice sector continue to pursue reforms aimed at making justice more accessible, efficient and responsive to the public.
