Five police officers who were on duty at Gigiri Police Station when the prime suspect in the Kware murder case and 12 other inmates escaped have been arraigned in court. The State is seeking to detain the officers for 14 days to allow time for a thorough investigation into the jailbreak.
The officers facing investigation are Corporal Ronald Babo, Constable Evans Kipkirui, Constable Mollent Achieng, Constable Zachary Nyabuto, and Constable Gerald Mutuku. According to court documents, they are under scrutiny for allegedly aiding the escape of the prisoners held at the station.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution argued that the officers were responsible for the prisoners’ custody on the day of the escape. Investigations revealed that Babo served as the duty NCO, Kipkirui was assigned as the cell sentry, Achieng and Nyabuto were station guards, and Mutuku held the position of report officer personnel.
The investigating officer informed the court that the inquiry is still ongoing. The officers’ mobile phones have been handed over to the cyber-crime unit at the DCI headquarters for forensic analysis, with results pending.
Authorities also revealed that several accomplices in the escape remain at large, and the five officers have expressed a willingness to assist in tracking down those involved.
The court is expected to rule on Thursday morning on whether to grant the police an additional 14 days to detain the officers while the investigation continues.
