Four suspects being investigated over the murder of city lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu have been allowed to remain in police custody as detectives continue with their investigations.
The suspects are Julius Cheruiyot, a police officer; Nicholas Lemiso, a boda boda rider; Noah Kipkurui; and Kenneth Sang, also a police officer. The four were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Gethi Kibiru, where the prosecution sought 30 days to hold them in custody, saying the period was necessary for investigators to complete their probe into the lawyer’s death.
Investigating officer Patrick Wachira told the court that detectives had taken more than a year to apprehend the suspects, describing the circumstances surrounding the case as complex. “These are not common thieves or phone snatchers, these are part sophisticated gang highly trained sleuths” Prosecution told the court as they pushed for the 30 days detention.
The court, however, granted the prosecution 15 days to hold the suspects in custody. Sang will be detained at Gigiri Police Station, Lemiso at Muthangari Police Station, Cheruiyot at Kibra Police Station, while Kipkurui will be held at Parklands Police Station. The matter will be mentioned on October 9, 2026, to assess the progress of investigations.
Mbobu was shot on September 9, 2025, along Magadi Road in Nairobi County. His death has also been linked in the proceedings to the shooting of Dr. Victoria Mutiso in Nairobi. Mbobu was representing Professor David Ndetei in a land dispute in Machakos.
