The Kibera Law Courts have released three human rights defenders who were arrested in connection with the June 25, 2025, demonstrations in Nairobi.

The trio John Mulingwa Nzau, Mark Amiani (alias General), and Francis Mutunge Mwangi (alias Chebukati) appeared before Magistrate Irene Macia Kahuya. During the hearing, the prosecution requested to detain them for 21 days, alleging they were part of a group of individuals who infiltrated the peaceful protests and caused destruction of property and loss of life.

According to the prosecution, the three are under investigation for multiple offences, including arson, theft, housebreaking, burglary, and malicious damage to property. Authorities claim they were arrested on the night of June 27, 2025, while traveling in a vehicle bound for Mombasa.

Preliminary investigations reportedly link the suspects to the planning, mobilization, and financing of individuals who hijacked the protests. Police alleged their involvement led to widespread looting, forced entry into buildings, and attacks on police stations in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

Despite the prosecution’s appeal to detain the suspects for further investigations, Magistrate Kahuya ruled that their constitutional rights to liberty and bail must be upheld. She ordered their release on a cash bail of Ksh 200,000 each
