Late Olympic champion Agnes Tirop’s husband has been released on bail two years after she was stabbed to death in her house.

Ibrahim Rotich was charged with her murder and has been in custody since 2021 after the then judge denied him bail ruling that he was a flight risk and for his own safety.

However, in a ruling yesterday, Justice Wananda Anuro released him on bail after Rotich through his lawyers made a fresh application for bail.

He was granted a Sh 400,000 bond with two sureties of the same amount or an alternative cash bail of Sh 500,000.

In his ruling, Justice Anuro said he had noted that the late Tirop’s family is still bitter for the loss of their loved one but that would not tie the hands of the court.

“I still feel that having been in custody for about two years the accused ought to now be allowed his liberty,” the judge ruled.

However, Rotich has been given strict conditions to abide by failure to which the bond has been cancelled.

Rotich has been ordered to report to the DCI Eldoret every Monday and the details of the reporting shall be documented.

He has also been barred from visiting any area within 15 KM of Iten where the murder happened unless with the authority of the court.

The court noted that from his submission and pre-bail report, Rotich has a home in Kesses which is Uasin Gishu County so he will be far from Elgeyo Marakwet.

Rotich has also been barred from leaving or traveling outside Uasin Gishu without express approval of the investigating officer.

25 year old Tirop was found dead with stab wounds in her abdomen and her husband was charged with her murder.
