A night of partying in Upper Hill has landed a Nairobi man behind bars after he failed to pay a hotel bill of KSh32,760.

Qurine Omondi Muteshi was sentenced to two months in jail or a fine of KSh30,000 after he admitted to obtaining credit by false pretense at Vibanda Village on October 3.

According to the prosecution, Omondi checked into the establishment in high spirits, ordering rounds of food, water, and alcohol for himself and several friends. As the night wore on, the celebrations escalated, and the total bill ballooned to KSh32,760.

When it came time to settle the account, Omondi allegedly slipped out without paying. The hotel management reported the matter, leading to his arrest and arraignment.

In mitigation before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, Omondi admitted that he had lost control during the celebration.

“I had some money so I called my friends to celebrate. I became too high and was surrounded by ladies asking for drinks. When I came back to my senses, everyone had disappeared, and I was left alone with the bill,” he confessed.

Omondi told the court that he later discovered several loan deductions on his mobile account and could not understand how the debts had piled up. Pleading for leniency, he said: “I ask the court to forgive me even if I must face punishment. Some of us are still new in Nairobi this is my fourth year here, and I’m still learning the ways of the city.”

After considering his plea, the magistrate noted that while the court sympathized with his situation, failure to pay for services rendered was a criminal offense. Omondi was consequently sentenced to serve two months in prison or pay a fine of KSh30,000.

The ruling serves as a cautionary tale for city revelers whose night of fun may end in unexpected legal trouble.
