Controversial preacher Paul Makenzi, the prime suspect in the Shakahola massacre, has told the High Court that his life is in danger while in custody at Shimo la Tewa Prisons.

Appearing before Justice Diana Mochache, Makenzi alleged that there is “bad blood” between him and the prison’s head, claiming that a recent incident amounted to an attempted assassination.

He told the court that he fears for his safety, insisting that he has been subjected to intimidation and harassment by some prison officers. “My life is not safe. There are people inside Shimo la Tewa who want to eliminate me,” Makenzi said, urging the court to intervene and ensure his protection.

His lawyers echoed the concerns, requesting that the court direct prison authorities to guarantee Makenzi’s security and consider transferring him to another correctional facility pending the hearing of his case.

Justice Mochache directed that the allegations be formally recorded and the matter referred to the Kenya Prisons Service for immediate investigation and response.

Makenzi, alongside several co-accused, is facing multiple counts of murder, manslaughter, and radicalization following the deaths of hundreds of followers allegedly starved to death in Shakahola Forest, Kilifi County.
