A man accused of involvement in a fraudulent scheme targeting a prime piece of land in Diani, Kwale County, valued at about Sh45 million, has been charged in court.
George Nyambati Mochache was arrested by detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Land Fraud Investigations Unit following an inquiry into the alleged irregular dealings involving a three-hectare parcel. The property is said to have been acquired by the complainant in 1991.
The dispute emerged in April 2023 after the complainant was reportedly informed that another person had entered the property and begun marking out subdivisions by placing beacons. Investigators further allege that clearing work had started on the land and that sections of the property were being advertised for sale. Following investigations, detectives compiled a case file and submitted it to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for review. The ODPP subsequently advised that Mochache be prosecuted for conspiracy to defraud.
Mochache was arrested at DCI Headquarters on October 2, 2026, after appearing in response to a court summons. He was later taken to Kwale ahead of his court appearance. He was arraigned before the Kwale Law Courts on October 5, 2026, where he denied the charge.
The court granted him a Sh10 million bond and set October 29, 2026, as the date for the matter to be mentioned. The DCI said investigations into land-related fraud remain ongoing as detectives continue pursuing individuals suspected of using fraudulent schemes to unlawfully acquire or dispose of property.
