Two police officers accused of shooting protester Boniface Mwangi Kariuki during recent anti-government protests in Nairobi have been arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts as investigations continue to unfold.

The officers, Klinzy Baraza Masinde and Duncan Kiprono, appeared before Magistrate BenMark Ekhubi following a miscellaneous application by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), which is seeking to hold them in custody to finalize forensic investigations.

While IPOA had requested a 21-day detention period, the court granted a 15-day remand to allow the authority to complete its inquiries.

The two officers, who have since been interdicted, are alleged to have opened fire on Kariuki on June 17 along Mondlane Street in Nairobi’s Central Business District. The incident occurred during Gen Z-led demonstrations that have gained significant traction both locally and internationally.

Court documents indicate that Kariuki was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital by Good Samaritans and underwent emergency surgery. He remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) apprehended the officers at the Nairobi Area Police Headquarters in response to growing public outrage and calls for justice.

IPOA outlined the scope of its investigation, which includes ballistic testing of the officers’ firearms, forensic analysis from the scene, CCTV footage review, and interviews with witnesses — including Kariuki, once his condition allows.

The matter is scheduled for mention on July 3, 2025.
